For those looking to explore Argentine wine while on a budget, there are plenty of great options to be found at $30 or less. This week's selection includes Chardonnays, Malbecs and a Cabernet Sauvignon blend in this price range; all are imported in sizable volumes, and they represent several leading wineries in Argentina's Mendoza region. From the 2023, 2022 and 2021 vintages, most of these wines are regional blends, but there are also a few single-vineyard bottlings, showing that there are terroir-expressive values to be had from this South American country.
There are two Malbecs, below, made by Bodega Mil Suelos; both are from Paraje Altamira, a subregion of Mendoza's Uco Valley. The Finca La Escuela bottling, this selection's top scorer, is named after a century-old school located on the same property as the vineyard from which the wine is made. (Mil Suelos partners Alejandro Sejanovich, Jeff Mausbach, and Jorge Crotta support the school by tending to its facilities, donating funds and sponsoring scholarships.)
This lineup also includes the Bodega Rolland Malbec Mendoza Mariflor 2021, a red with spiced plum and violet notes. Read on to get our score and full tasting note for this fantastic Argentine wine and eight others.
