Jackson Family Wines Buys Key Russian River Vineyard
Jackson Family Wines is snaring a prime vineyard in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley with the purchase of Saralee’s Vineyard from growers Richard and Saralee Kunde. The purchase price was not disclosed.
The 200-acre vineyard was first planted in 1989 and produces 14 different grape varieties, including Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, sold to wineries such as Arrowood, Kenwood, St. Francis, Acacia and Clos du Bois. “We’ve sourced grapes from this property for many years and know first-hand Saralee’s and Richard’s commitment to quality,” said Barbara Banke, chairman of Jackson Family Wines, in a statement. “We look forward to being the next stewards of this revered land.”
The Kundes, who are not affiliated with Kunde Winery in nearby Sonoma Valley, said it was time for them to downsize their operation. They retained more than 80 acres of vines. The couple has been tireless supporters of Sonoma County’s food, wine and agricultural communities.
A total of about 260 acres was included in the sale, most notably Richard’s Grove, a shady outdoor venue where the Kundes have long hosted festivals, auctions and other fund-raising events. Banke said the Jackson family plans to continue using the grove for community events.
The deal is set to close in early December.
